about

"jukebox revolution" is the first single off of our upcoming WALKIE TALKIE. john came into rehearsal one day and played this riff from inside his plastic "bubble" (the basement was tricked out with plastic so we could rehearse during the pandemic). the rest of us about lost our minds. annie went for walks and listened to the music over and over again, until a narrative started to reveal itself. she strung together vignettes from her own life and crafted a story of minor teen rebellion. the song is about how music saves and shapes us, and how we learn about music through people we love.

lyrics

lying on the bedroom floor
staring at the ceiling
record spinning round and round
feels just like religion

should i listen to big star
or should i listen to my dad?
they tell me to fall in love
he tells me to get a job

hey hey what do you say

juke box revolution
shalalala ooh baby
girls just want to have fun
drown you out, dance around
turn it up i wanna be hurt by sound!
only my friends understand
what it's like to hold a record in your hand

i drove you to your mother’s house
you let me see your room at night
in the dark we press
our smiles together

little window by your bed
radio above your head
you turn it up and sing
“and it makes we wonder”

hey hey what do you say

juke box revolution
shalalala ooh baby baby
girls just want to have fun
drown you out, dance around
turn it up i wanna be hurt by sound!
only my friends understand
what it’s like to have a favorite band

i was a teenage ghost
only you could see me
i’d steal the keys, take the car
slip into the city

throw pebbles at your window
“five years” on the stereo
i was so sad about my dad
you held me like a baby

hey hey what do you say

juke box revolution
shalalala ooh baby
girls just want to have fun
drown you out, dance around
turn it up i wanna be hurt by sound!
only my friends understand
what it’s like to hold a record in your hand

lying on my comforter
looking at the cover art
on my stomach
studying the lyrics

joni sings in cursive
about the last time she saw richard
i won’t come down to dinner
got a job now i buy my own records

hey hey what do you say

juke box revolution
shalalala ooh baby
girls just wanna have fun
drown you out, dance around
turn it up i wanna be hurt by sound!
only my friends understand
what it’s like to hold a record in your hand

(adrianne lenker said something about seeing someone's room at night. that stuck with me, and i used it as inspiration for a line in this song.)
