about

we had a band slumber party (pre-pandemic) and annie pulled out her computer to transcribe the wide-ranging conversation the band was having (plots from the x-files, strife in their neighborhoods, early bands they were in). she then used the political climate to create the framework inside of which all these disparate stories could exist.

lyrics

well, someone lit the doom fuse
and everyone looks like
a frances bacon painting now
it’s becoming more and more
difficult to love my fellow man
on worry street every tv
tells love to beat it
trafficking only in confusion
the conspiracy salesman
obsesses from inside each home
his tiny hands push at the edges of the screen
his gestures large and meaningless
sign language for the conspiracy clutch
take the money and run
everything looks like a target
when you’ve got a gun

share my misery

you know that guy who’s mouth is a tiny asshole?
he’s hooked up on ego feed
ventilating the collective id
providing a fan service
for these brothers who
live in a house out in the country
they keep their limbless mom
under the bed on a roll-y cart
like car mechanics use
they pull her out when they want her
and drive around in an old convertible
looking for someone to kidnap
to “walking after midnight”
a haze of internet depression
slinks over a worried nation
everyone alone medicating
but only a few can actually get medication

share my misery

running a largely successful bullying
campaign creating false outrage
he’s spreading a contagion
of bad behavior in a captive nation
providing a fan service for
this couple next door
who start a fight inside the house
then bring the fight outside
and then everyone on the block
can hear the end of that marriage
or that crazy mom and her teenage daughter
white trash, you know
they knock down drag out fight for 45 minutes
and i’m kind of like “i wanted to rake the lawn
and now i can't do that. now i just have to
go inside until you stop”

or those fans across the street
in that weird flop house for forty year olds
all these white dudes show up everyday
with their bikes and two 24 packs
of mountain ice at ten in the morning
that old guy with a baseball cap and junk jeans
an american flag patch on the hole of his knee
they set up their lawn chairs and
throw their beer cans everywhere
because it is their god given right
to do as they please

and sometimes i sit on my steps
and play my ukele,
which is the smallest and
happiest instrument in the world
